Better In Our Backyard has pulled off their first Mining and Energy Expo.

It’s taking place down at the Radisson Blu in Bloomington. 300 people from around the country are attending.

Wall to wall presentations and panels took place on Thursday. Topics included permitting, communications, and workforce development.

Ryan Sistad, Executive Director of BIOBY, shared that he wants companies to learn from each other. “This morning we had a panel with four permitted copper projects. Regulators and policy makers in Minnesota can learn from others.”

Some mining leaders from the Northland were presenters, including Dean DeBeltz from Twin Metals Minnesota, Kristen Vake from the Iron Mining Association, Jessica Johnson from Talon Metals, and Jim Bougalis from North American Iron.

Roland Hill, from Indigenous Business Advisors, was also part of a panel. He told us, “It’s important to share our knowledge, and be a resource for people, so better projects can go in the ground. Talking with others from around the country and Canada, that’s how we learn.”
