Komensky’s Market, a landmark Duryea business since 1920 known for its kielbasi and large selection of meats, has permanently closed.
“All good things must come to an end …Yes it is true — we have decided to close the store,” owners of the business wrote on Facebook recently. “This was not an easy decision but at this time it is the best decision for us. We thank you for all of your support especially after my brother passed away in 2019 and we appreciate each and every one of you.”
The store remained open after the death of co-owner Robert Sepelyak in December 2019. His sister, Shari Sepelyak Zbegner, had been the owner since.
A sign on the door of the business says: “Please be advised that the store is no longer open. Thank you for your support over the years.”
Komensky’s often advertised with the slogan “Kielbasi is our specialty” and was a frequent award winner over the years at the Plymouth Alive Kielbasa Festival.

Hundreds of people shared the Facebook post about the closing of Komensky’s after 105 years with a majority clicking on the sad face emoji.
Others, like the Duryea Police Department, wrote tribute posts.
“Today we say goodbye to a true piece of Duryea history, Komensky’s Market. For decades, it’s been more than just a store. It’s where families shopped for holiday dinners, neighbors caught up, and generations of memories were made,” the department wrote. “After many successful years, Komensky’s Market is closing its doors for good. It’s hard to see such a beloved part of our town go, but we’re deeply grateful for all the years of service, kindness, and community spirit.”
West Pittston’s Facebook page also issued a post.
“For so many in our area, Komensky’s wasn’t just a place to shop. It was part of daily life. From homemade kielbasa to friendly conversations at the counter, it represented the kind of small-town tradition that defines Luzerne County,” the post read. “As we say goodbye, we also say thank you to the Komensky family and their staff for decades of warmth, hard work, and community spirit. Their legacy will always be remembered in Duryea and throughout the Wyoming Valley.”
