F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix aiming to speed up construction timeline

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Formula One Las Vegas Grand Prix is one of the many sources of traffic cones in the valley as crews build and dismantle the track.

“Once they start blocking streets and interfering with people’s ability to attend work or an event that really is the toughest part on locals,” Michael Stewart, who lives near the circuit, said.

The team behind the race said they are trying to change that.

“The circuit construction is less time than it has been in previous years,” Lori Nelson-Kraft, Senior Vice President with Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix, said.

She said they have learned from the first two years of the race and are working with Clark County, businesses and resorts along the track to figure out how to cut construction time.

One of the major improvements is the construction timeline of the Flamingo vehicle bridge over Koval Lane. During the first year of the grand prix, it took ten days to build the bridge, the next year, seven. This year, it took five days to build the bridge.

Track barrier installation along the Strip is also faster. According to Nelson-Kraft, it’s two weeks shorter. The barriers along Las Vegas Boulevard will start going up Nov. 10 and come down before Thanksgiving.

Most of the construction happens overnight, ending at 9 a.m. along Las Vegas Boulevard and 6 a.m. on other streets.

“Unless you’re up in the middle of the night in and around the circuit, you’re probably not even experiencing a lot of the construction work going on,” Nelson-Kraft said.

During the week of the race, people who need to get to work in the resort corridor can use a park-and-ride program to get to properties when roads are closed.
