The energy in breaking waves is being put to new use generating electric power. In September, Eco Wave Power launched the first U.S. wave energy project at the Port of Los Angeles. It attaches floaters to existing marine structures, such as buoys and docks. The up and down motion of the waves sends pressurized fluid to a conversion unit on land that generates electricity. The demonstration project can generate around 100 kilowatts of power (which could power a few dozen homes) and will run for two years to collect data. Eco Wave Power is already working on other projects in Portugal and Taiwan.
