A downtown Chico business is repairing damage from gunfire believed to have stemmed from an altercation.
CHICO, Calif. – A downtown Chico business is dealing with the aftermath of gunfire that struck its premises.
The shooting took place early Sunday morning, and though no one was hurt, the incident has left business owners and the community on edge.
The gunfire occurred around 4:45 a.m. near Main and Seventh Street, with multiple reports of shots fired. Initially, no crime scene or shell casings were found. However, officers later discovered two bullet holes in the front window of Helen’s Donut Nook on Main Street.
Chico Police believe the gunfire stemmed from an altercation near Ninth and Main Street, and the business was not specifically targeted.
Steve O’Bryan, owner of Pullins Cyclery adjacent to Helen’s Donut Nook, shared his thoughts on the incident.
“The thing I’d like the community to know, to be aware of what’s going on in your town. But I’d also request glass is very expensive these days, I think they got a quote of a couple thousand dollars to replace these two windows, which has gone up considerably since the last time I replaced a piece of glass in my business. So I would encourage the community to come on down to Helen’s Donuts and buy a donut or two,” O’Bryan said.
O’Bryan, a longtime resident since the 1950s, expressed his disappointment at the violence in the community. He urged locals to support Helen’s Donut Nook as they work to repair the damage.
Chico Police said that they continue to investigate the altercation and are seeking information from the public. They ask anyone with details to contact them directly.
Fortunately, no one was inside Helen’s Donut Nook when the shots were fired.
