HOUSTON – In honor of Medical Assistants Recognition Day, Houston Life visited Fortis College Houston South to meet the students and instructors behind a program that’s shaping Houston’s future healthcare heroes.
Walking through the halls at Fortis feels a lot like stepping into a working clinic. Students practice drawing blood, taking vital signs, and running EKGs—all in realistic lab settings designed to mirror what they’ll encounter in hospitals and doctors’ offices.
“We like our students to have that real-life experience,” said Seantenia Lynch, Program Director for the Medical Assistant program. “They’re not just learning theory—they’re learning how to think critically and handle the situations they’ll face out in the field.”
Lynch knows firsthand how transformative that training can be—she started her own career as a medical assistant right out of high school. Today, she brings that experience into the classroom, helping students discover their own calling in healthcare.
“Being a medical assistant is incredibly diverse,” she said. “You can work in pediatrics, urology, OB-GYN, dermatology—you learn both the clinical and administrative sides, so your options are wide open.”
The nine-month hybrid program is designed for real life. Students spend two days a week on campus for hands-on lab work, while completing the rest of their coursework online—making it flexible for anyone balancing work or family.
And when it’s time to apply what they’ve learned, students head out for externships at clinics and medical offices across Houston, gaining valuable real-world experience through Fortis College’s partnerships with healthcare providers throughout the region.
“We want our students to think of themselves as a brand,” Lynch said. “When they graduate, they should feel confident, professional, and ready to make a difference.”
It’s a fitting message on a day set aside to celebrate the vital role medical assistants play in keeping our healthcare system running—and the students at Fortis College are ready to step into that future.
