HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — The man who struck and killed a 54-year-old construction worker last year in Hartford will serve seven years in prison for manslaughter, according to court documents.

Tommy Nguyen, who was 25 when the crash happened in June 2024, pleaded guilty in August to manslaughter. After the crash, he claimed that he was having a seizure when he hit Jose Diaz-Nieves, a private contractor for the Metropolitan District, in the area of West Boulevard and South Whitney Street.

Witnesses at the crash said that Nguyen was driving fast in a Honda Accord through the construction zone before he hit Diaz-Nieves. His license had been suspended for over a year before the crash.

However, police wrote, video of the crash contradicts the witness statement. An officer wrote that the Accord is seen on video “maneuvering to change lanes and avoid crashing into numerous vehicles” around the time Nguyen said he had a seizure.

On Monday, he was sentenced to 18 years in prison, with the sentence suspended after seven years served and five years of probation.
