BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WBNG) – The sights and sounds of construction were on full display for students at the Southern Tier Construction-Technology Day.

The annual event, a collaboration between the New York State Department of Transportation, the Broome County Highway Department, Broome-Tioga Workforce New York, Broome-Tioga BOCES Career Development Center, and other local organizations, welcomed approximately 600 students to explore many career paths within the construction career field.

Thomas Westcott, Coordinator of OA Career Center, for the Owego-Appalachian Central School District, always looks forward to the event.

“Coming here every year, this is a must participate event on the Broome-Tioga BOCES calendar because students get to actually participate and go on the equipment,” says Westcott. “They get to interact with career representatives from different fields and get a head start on understanding some of the career options they’re going to incorporate in these much-needed career paths,” said Westcott.

For Dan Coleman, a Heavy Equipment and Repair and Operation teacher at Broome-Tioga BOCES, the event is an opportunity for students of all ages to learn and connect.

Coleman enjoys bringing his current students, saying, “I bring them along with our equipment, and they get to teach younger kids how to operate as well as talk to them about the trades.”

For many students, the event is an opportunity to dig into what their future could hold.

“I just think it’s great being able to see the opportunities that you’re able to find out here,” says Nicholas Irimescu, a student at Hancock Central School. “You might not know what you want to do yet, so being out here and discovering what new things are there, you might find out what was actually for you.”
