An Amtrak train struck construction equipment on the tracks in Lake Forest Sunday afternoon, injuring a Metra employee, officials said.
The southbound train, traveling from Milwaukee to Chicago, hit a front-end loader near Everett and Waukegan Roads shortly after noon, according to Metra spokesman Michael Gillis. A crew was working in the area to replace railroad ties.
The operator of the loader was taken to a local hospital, treated, and later released, Gillis said. None of the 206 passengers or crew members on board reported injuries, according to Amtrak.
The Amtrak train was canceled, and passengers were transferred to a Metra train to continue their trip into Chicago. Milwaukee District North service was suspended for about 3½ hours before resuming later in the afternoon, Gillis said.
The cause of the incident remains under investigation, Gillis added.
