Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Iraq’s renewable energy sector is undergoing a qualitative transformation following the government’s announcement of an ambitious plan to develop major projects with a production capacity of more than 10,000 megawatts.

This measure is part of a diversification agenda that aims to reduce reliance on conventional fuels for power generation.

According to Iraqi Electricity Minister Ziyad Ali Fadel, the investments total over $6 billion and include solar energy, wind energy, and waste recycling facilities.

The Iraq Investment Forum, held under the auspices of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, provides a venue for showcasing more than 160 investment opportunities in different industries, including energy projects that aim to increase power generation and eventually reach self-sufficiency.

Renewable energy, such as solar and wind energy, has now emerged as a strategic alternative for Iraq, allowing it to satisfy the population’s demands while relieving strain on existing power plants.

These initiatives are consistent with the government’s objective, which began at the Government Palace in Baghdad with the opening of a two-megawatt solar power plant to cover the building’s usage, establishing a model for increasing the use of renewable energy in Iraq.

These efforts are projected to increase electricity supply in the coming years, assisting in meeting the demands of the people and economic sectors while also placing Iraq as a regional leader in sustainable energy.
