VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) — Duke Energy is investing in technology aimed at keeping the lights on during storms and other outages.
More than half of Duke Energy’s customers in Vigo County are now served by self-healing technology.
Duke Energy compared these upgrades to a GPS that reroutes you when there’s a closure or crash ahead.
While electric crews may still need to make repairs, Duke Energy said this technology can reduce the number of customers affected by outages by 75 percent.
The company reported that 6,700 outages were avoided in Vigo County last year, saving more than 20,000 hours of outage time. In Clay County, self-healing technology prevented 1,700 outages.
